Introduction

If you’ve ever considered drawing a fox, this article will take the guesswork out of it and show you how to draw one step by step. Whether you’re drawing for fun or creating artwork, there are just six simple steps to follow in order to produce your first fox drawing! Let’s get started!

Things you’ll need to draw a fox

The only items you will need are paper, a pencil, and a drawing board or canvas. I used 20 x 30 paper, but you can use whatever size fits your needs best. I prefer using pencils rather than pens, as I find they give me more control. However, if you are in a hurry and want to finish quickly ink would work just fine.

Basic Shape for Head

The first step in drawing any animal is getting down its basic shape. To do that, start with an oval for your fox’s head. Next, draw two ovals on either side of it for his ears. They should be positioned so they are further apart on top than they are at their bottoms, which should touch at about the halfway point along your fox’s head.

Use circles for his eyes and add half-moon shapes inside them as guides for where his pupils will go. Add two small lines below each eye to represent his cheekbones. Finally, sketch a curved line under each ear to indicate his jawline. You now have all of the pieces you need to begin drawing out your fox!

Body of a Fox

Draw out your fox’s body by making two large ovals. Make these ovals larger at both ends and make sure that they are thick but still have distinct outlines. The lower oval should be a bit thinner than the upper one. The circle on top of the upper oval should be larger and rounder in shape; make it smaller if you’d like your fox to be cuter and more rounded.

Underneath each circle, draw an upside-down triangle for your fox’s muzzle. The triangles should be pointed downwards towards your fox’s feet. Just below each circle, draw an upside-down U-shape for your fox’s ears. Finally, draw three lines around your fox’s entire body to indicate fur. These lines should start from underneath his arms and end just before his legs.

Legs, Tail, and Feet

It’s s time to move onto its legs, tail, and feet Right below the fox’s body draw two circle shapes for paws. They do not need to be perfect circles, just make them as round as possible. In between those circles, draw another oval shape for your fox’s feet.

Then go ahead and add details like toes on each foot (do these one at a time), claws on each paw, and fur around each foot and leg. Once you have done all of that, go ahead and erase any extra lines from your original sketch so that everything fits together nicely. Your final step is to draw your fox’s tail. It should start off thin at first but then get wider toward the end. It should also curve up slightly towards its tip.

Final Touches

After you’ve sketched out your fox using a pencil, go back with a pen and trace over your lines. The black lines will show through on your final product, giving you depth and dimension! If you want to color your fox, use colored pencils or markers—you can even mix in some watercolor for a softer look.
